The Great Depression was a severe global economic downturn that lasted from 1929 to the late 1930s. It was the longest, deepest, and most widespread depression of the 20th century.
The Great Depression was triggered by the stock market crash of 1929, also known as „Black Tuesday.“ In just a few days, the stock market lost about 25% of its value, causing panic among investors. This led to a widespread collapse of stock prices, and many banks failed as a result.
The effects of the Great Depression were devastating. Unemployment rates skyrocketed, reaching 25% in the United States and even higher in some other countries. People lost their savings, homes, and jobs. Many businesses shut down, and agricultural production declined. There was a significant decline in international trade, exacerbating the economic crisis.
The Great Depression also had a profound impact on society. Homelessness and poverty became widespread. Soup kitchens and breadlines were set up to provide food for the unemployed and the poor. Families were torn apart as people migrated in search of work. The psychological impact of the Depression was also significant, with many people experiencing feelings of hopelessness and despair.
Government intervention played a crucial role in tackling the Great Depression. In the United States, President Franklin D. Roosevelt implemented the New Deal, a series of social and economic reforms aimed at providing relief, recovery, and reform. The New Deal included programs such as the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which provided jobs to unemployed workers, and the Social Security Act, which established a system of retirement benefits.
The Great Depression ultimately came to an end with the onset of World War II. The war stimulated economic growth as governments spent heavily on defense, creating jobs and boosting industrial production.
Overall, the Great Depression was a period of immense economic hardship and social upheaval. It had a profound impact on individuals and societies around the world and shaped economic policies for years to come.
